Connecting 5 Penn Plaza

The Venue

5 Penn Plaza, one of New York City’s most iconic buildings, is located in the heart of the Penn Plaza District.  This historic 24 story residential, office and retail building was originally built in 1915 and was known as the Printing Crafts Building. Now 5 Penn Plaza is home to prominent New York businesses including Thomas Publishing, Sirius Radio and The Wallace Foundation.

The Challenge

During installation of a new DAS system at 5 Penn Plaza, the telecommunications supplier experienced major PIM issues on all the transmission lines.  The traditional connectors used on this project  were all failing the carrier’s minimum specifications.  These failures brought the project to a standstill, causing a 7 day delay.

The Solution

Growing frustrated with the unexpected project delays and excessive operational costs, the telecommunications supplier called on JMA and  its connector solutions, to get their project back on track.

A key reason JMA was chosen for this undertaking was due to its world renowned compression connectors.  JMA connectors utilize a patented active compression technology that eliminates PIM, installs in 1 minute and are guaranteed for long term reliability.

Once on-site, JMA tested five  of currently installed lines for PIM.  All five traditional lines failed to meet the carrier’s minimum specification of -140 dBc.  JMA replaced those traditional lines with five JMA compression connectors and retested.  The results were unmistakable, all JMA installed connectors passed 100% on the first attempt.

Due to JMA Connector’s ease of use and 1 minute installation process, the previously untrained contractors were trained and installing good connections within hours. They completed over 1000 connections in less than 3 days.  All  of the newly installed JMA connections passed the carrier’s PIM requirement 100%.

The Results

JMA’s compression connectors saved time, money and propelled the DAS project to completion. If this project continued with the traditional connectors, at the average rate of 20 successful connections installed per day, the project would have been delayed by another 18 days, totaling $125,000 of excess operational cost.

               $5,000 daily labor rate (multiple crews) X (initial 7 day delay + 18 day delay) = $125,000

JMA Connector Solutions saved project time, money and eliminated all PIM failure related issues.
